Cookies Are Dead in the Fight Against Fraud R.I.P.

It’s time to write the obituary for cookies as a way to reliably identify a device to prevent online fraud.  HTML cookies LSOs (Flash cookies) have been on life support for a while now, thanks to privacy experts outing them as a means for advertisers to track you from Web site to Web site.  Gartner analyst Avivah Litan called it back in February this year in a report titled Privacy Collides With Fraud Detection and Crumbles Flash Cookies. Cookies are still useful as a method to identify a device in the case when users opt-in for positive identification, but not so for detecting online fraud.

We foresaw the demise of the cookie long before the privacy advocates and analysts called attention to the topic.  Since the initial release, our customers have benefited from forward-looking technology embedded in our solution that can identify a device when fraudsters delete or block cookies in an attempt to remain anonymous.
