CyberSource was one of the pioneers in online payment and fraud management services, starting in 1994 as the first seeds of digital commerce were being sewn. Over 400,000 global businesses now use CyberSource solutions, which seek to simplify and automate payment operations and streamline fraud management.

“By partnering with ThreatMetrix, we can offer best-in-class fraud detection services to our merchants, enabling them to more accurately profile the true identity and behavior of connecting users.”

– Scott Boding, Senior Director, Risk Solutions Product Management, CyberSource

CyberSource’s global reach, coupled with its vision to automate and streamline the payments space, meant that it needed access to the best digital identity intelligence to really understand the risk profile of online users, reducing instances of fraud while passively authenticating trusted users.

“CyberSource and ThreatMetrix have been partners for more than eight years. CyberSource is at the forefront of securing cross-border transactions for large global merchants; ThreatMetrix values the opportunity to partner on this key strategic imperative, supporting e-commerce growth and development.”

Leveraging Global Shared Intelligence to More Accurately Authenticate Cross-Border Transactions

With the exponential rise in global e-commerce, organizations are increasingly handling more cross-border transactions. 1 in 5 transactions in the ThreatMetrix Digital Identity Network are now cross-border, and this volume is growing.

“The size and scale of the ThreatMetrix Network matches our customers’ demands for accurate global digital and threat intelligence.”

Scott Boding, Senior Director, Risk Solutions Product Management, CyberSource

Many organizations view cross-border transactions as inherently riskier than domestic ones. By leveraging ThreatMetrix intelligence, CyberSource can confidently secure cross-border transactions, supporting the growth of global e-commerce merchants.

Harnessing the Power of a Global Network

The ThreatMetrix Digital Identity Network collects and processes global shared intelligence from millions of daily consumer interactions including logins, payments and new account applications. Using this information, ThreatMetrix creates a unique digital identity for each user by analyzing the myriad connections between devices, locations and anonymized personal information. Behavior that deviates from this trusted digital identity can be accurately identified in real time, alerting CyberSource customers to potential fraud.

Detecting Identity Theft

As global data breaches continue to feature in the evolving cybercrime story, fraudsters have easy access to vast swathes of stolen identity credentials. They create full and convincing identities using a patchwork quilt of data bought from the dark web, making it harder than ever for digital businesses to really know who they are transacting with. Fraudsters use these credentials to open new accounts, takeover existing ones and make fraudulent payments. ThreatMetrix is able to pinpoint anomalies between the digital identity of a trusted user and a fraudster; CyberSource customers can therefore accurately detect transactions using stolen/spoofed identities and drastically reduce chargebacks.

  • ThreatMetrix Trust Tags enable customers to differentiate between fraudsters and legitimate users. Trust can be associated dynamically with any combination of online attributes, such as devices, email addresses, card numbers or any other attributes involved in accepting, rejecting or reviewing a transaction.
  • ThreatMetrix Smart ID identifies returning users that wipe cookies, use private browsing and change other parameters to bypass device fingerprinting. This improves returning user detection, reduces false positives and helps identify fraudsters who might be using the same device to make multiple payments.

Thwarting the Masters of Disguise

Fraudsters have been quick to realize that organizations often set custom rules to block transactions from particular countries or regions that are deemed too high-risk. To bypass these rules, fraudsters often attempt to cloak or spoof their location; location spoofing is 60 percent higher on cross-border transactions than domestic ones.

  • ThreatMetrix deep connection analysis technologies accurately detect the use of technologies such as hidden proxies and VPNs and allows CyberSource to see the true IP address, geolocation and other attributes of each event, backed by global identity data over time.
